Abu Dhabi: A new policy to govern the use and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health care has been released by the emirate’s health sector regulator, the Department of Health.
The policy, released on Monday, reflects the department’s support for the development, use and adoption of customised AI technologies and software to enhance health care in Abu Dhabi, the Department announced in a statement. The policy defines AI as the ‘mimicking of human thought and cognitive processes to solve complex problems automatically’.
“The true path to the development of the emirate’s health care systems and services is through AI. With this policy, we will not only provide the best of quality health care services to our people by using the best international practices and technologies but will also cement Abu Dhabi’s standing on the global AI map,” said Mohammad Al Hameli, acting undersecretary at the Department.
“Health care is one of the sectors with most potential for applied AI, where it can play a central role in improving evidence-based quality of care, efficiency, effectiveness, safety, access and delivery of health care services, and all types of population and patient research,” Al Hameli added.
The new policy applies to all licensed health care providers in the emirate, as well as to Abu Dhabi-based pharmaceutical manufacturers, health care insurers, licensed health care researchers involved in human subject research as well as every local, national and locally-based international end-user that utilises, or plans to use, Abu Dhabi-based population or patient clinical and non-clinical data in AI endeavours.
